How to use the tap tempo tool
Play the song you want to find the BPM of. As soon as you can hear a steady pulse, tap the button (or hit the spacebar) on every beat you feel. The tool averages the time between your taps and converts it into beats per minute. You will start seeing a stable BPM number after about four taps; eight to twelve taps gives you the most accurate reading. Tap on the kick drum or downbeat for the cleanest result — tapping on offbeats or syncopated hits will throw the average off. If you stop tapping for three seconds, the tool resets so you can start fresh on a new section.
When producers use tap tempo
Producers reach for tap tempo when they want to match the BPM of a reference track without metering plugins. Common use cases:
- Sampling from a vinyl rip or YouTube reference where the source has no listed tempo. Tap along, get the BPM, set your DAW to that tempo, and your loops snap to the grid.

Why a tap tempo beats automatic detection
Automatic BPM detection plugins parse audio waveforms and guess at the tempo by looking for periodic transients. They get the answer right most of the time on straight-ahead 4/4 productions, but they struggle with ambiguous music: half-time vs double-time confusion, drumless intros, swung rhythms, polyrhythms, and tracks with strong syncopated bass that the algorithm mistakes for a downbeat. A human ear with two seconds of context outperforms any algorithm on these edge cases. Tap tempo gives you a manual override.

Within ±1 BPM after eight taps for a steady song. The tool averages your tap intervals, so a couple of slightly-off taps get smoothed out. For absolute precision, tap for the full twelve-tap window.
Why does my tempo show as half or double what I expected?
You probably tapped on every other beat (showing half) or on every subdivision (showing double). The tool reports exactly the tempo you tapped at — if you want quarter-note BPM, tap on quarter notes. For genres like drum & bass or footwork, producers often work in two reference tempos (e.g. 87 and 174) and switch based on context.
Can I tap with the spacebar instead of clicking?
Yes — the spacebar is mapped to the same tap action. Producers often prefer it because you can rest your fingers on the keys and tap rhythmically without needing to look at the screen.
How is tap tempo different from automatic BPM detection?
Automatic detection analyzes the audio file itself, looking at transients to guess the tempo.
