Staccato vs legato: which string loop fits your track
Legato and sustained string lines are glue. They fill the space between your kick and your topline with a slow-moving bed, and because the bow never stops, they smear over the grid in a way that hides a stiff drum programming. These are what you want under a ballad, an ambient intro, or any section that needs to feel held together. Staccato and spiccato lines do the opposite: short, articulated bow strokes that act like a rhythmic element. A staccato cello ostinato is a bassline and a hook at once, and it's the backbone of a lot of trailer and drill string work.
If you only grab one type, grab legato for emotion and staccato for energy, then learn to layer them.
